Poema J712 / F479
Por não poder parar para a
Morte –
Gentil, parou ela para mim –
Na Carruagem fomos Nós –
E a Imortalidade.
Sem pressa fomos – Ela não
tinha pressa
E eu deixei de lado
A minha labuta e também o
meu lazer,
Por sua Cortesia –
Passamos pela Escola, onde
Crianças esforçavam-se
No Recreio – em Círculo –
Passamos pelos campos de
Grãos Afrontantes
Passamos pelo Sol Poente –
Ou antes - Ela passou a Nós
–
O Orvalho tornou-se
Tiritante e Gelado –
Pois só de Gaze - o meu
Vestido –
O meu Xale - só de Tule –
Paramos ante uma Casa que
lembrava
A um Inchaço do Chão –
O Teto, mal se notava –
A Cornija - no Chão –
Desde então – são Séculos –
e ainda assim
Sentia-os mais breves que o
Dia
De antemão supus que as
Cabeças dos Cavalos
Rumavam para a Eternidade –
Poem J712 / F479
Because I could not stop
for Death –
He kindly stopped for me –
The Carriage held but just Ourselves –
And Immortality.
He kindly stopped for me –
The Carriage held but just Ourselves –
And Immortality.
We slowly drove – He knew
no haste
And I had put away
My labor and my leisure too,
For His Civility –
And I had put away
My labor and my leisure too,
For His Civility –
We passed the School, where
Children strove
At Recess - in the Ring –
We passed the Fields of Gazing Grain –
We passed the Setting Sun –
At Recess - in the Ring –
We passed the Fields of Gazing Grain –
We passed the Setting Sun –
Or rather - He passed Us –
The Dews drew quivering and Chill –
For only Gossamer, my Gown –
My Tippet – only Tulle –
The Dews drew quivering and Chill –
For only Gossamer, my Gown –
My Tippet – only Tulle –
We paused before a House that
seemed
A Swelling of the Ground –
The Roof was scarcely visible –
The Cornice - in the Ground –
A Swelling of the Ground –
The Roof was scarcely visible –
The Cornice - in the Ground –
Since
then - 'tis Centuries – and yet
Feels shorter than the Day
I first surmised the Horses' Heads
Were toward Eternity –
Feels shorter than the Day
I first surmised the Horses' Heads
Were toward Eternity –
